Coyote Point's Equalizer Smoothes ASP Delivery for Recruiting Solutions
Denver, CO-based Recruiting Solutions International, Inc. is not only a worldwide leader in recruiting and workforce management software applications. It's also an ASP - which means that its infrastructure has to be as good as its software design.
Recruiting Solution's customer base of 250 companies and institutions — including Exxon Mobil, Bridgestone/Firestone, Ericsson Canada, FOX Channels Group, and C-SPAN — will not brook downtime or even slow processing for the core human resource functions automated by the WorkforceERP Suite.
From its 1999 beginnings, Recruiting Solutions has scaled its deployment to meet the "always on/always fast" imperative. "In early 2000, our growth took off, and we moved to balance traffic among clustered servers," says Kelly Witherbee, Software Engineer at Recruiting Solutions. "We needed a load balancing solution that we could deploy quickly and easily and that would scale with our infrastructure."
After a competitive review, Recruiting Solutions settled on Coyote Point's Equalizer, an intelligent plug-and-play load balancing appliance. Equalizer routes incoming traffic among server clusters, using multiple criteria to determine which server is best equipped to take each hit. It provides failover by detecting server failure and automatically bypassing failed servers. Active Content Verification tests all components of each server in each cluster, ensuring that not only server hardware but also the server operating system and application software are fully operational. A browser-based graphical display of server and cluster performance makes it easy to determine when more server capacity is needed. Starting at $3,995, Equalizer is the most cost-effective online traffic management system on the market today.
The first cluster deployment in spring 2000 resulted in immediate network relief. "Ever since we got the first Equalizer up and running we've been easily able to handle our user traffic. Whenever connection times start to creep up, we just add another server to the cluster," Ms. Witherbee says.
Keeping the Reports Running
At any given time, hundreds of personnel at hundreds of client sites may be simultaneously logging on to Recruiting Solutions' servers to run the many applications and reports bundled in the Workforce ERP Suite - from obtaining job requisition approval to running automated application evaluations, submitting job postings to some 1,300 job boards, running background screenings on job applicants, and many more. "The major bandwidth challenge comes from clients running reports and searches that require database clearing," explains Ms. Witherbee. "The load balancing ensures that the more labor-intensive uses are evenly dispersed throughout the cluster."
Recently, Recruiting Solutions added a second Equalizer, providing redundancy in the event that the initial unit should go down. "We've reached the point where we need that extra layer of protection, and we were able to add it painlessly — the browser-based failover configuration was easy," Ms. Witherbee notes.
"Equalizer has made our jobs easier while ensuring that our customers are satisfied with ASP delivery of the WorkforceERP Suite," Ms. Witherbee concludes. What more could we ask?"
