Geographic Load Balancing
In a geographic cluster a collection of sites provide a common service, such as an application or Web site. The various sites in a geographic cluster can be hundreds or even thousands of miles apart. Geographic load balancing can dramatically improve reliability by ensuring that your service remains available even if a site-wide failure occurs. Equalizer can also improve performance by routing requests to the location with the least network latency.
Envoy routes each incoming request to the site best able to handle it. If a site is unavailable or overloaded, Envoy routes requests to the most appropriate site in the geographic cluster. When you enable geographic load balancing, Envoy directs incoming client requests to one of the sites in the geographic cluster based on the following criteria:
- Availability: If a site is unavailable due to network outage, server failure, or any other reason, Equalizer stops directing requests to that site.
- Performance: Envoy tracks the load and performance at each site and uses this information to determine the site that can process the request most efficiently.
- Distance: Envoy notes the site that is closest to the client (in network terms) and offers the least network latency.

Server Load Balancing (SLB) brings scalability to the data center. Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) brings scalability across all data centers and completes the application delivery solution of the Equalizer. If there's a network outage, server failure or other disturbance, Envoy ensures availability by engaging surviving sites seamlessly. Traffic is directed to multiple data centers according to business-defined policies matched against real-time performance and availability metrics gathered from each data center. Equalizer then to chooses the best destination for each new request ensuring the highest performance as you scale your applications.
To guarantee even higher levels of availability, the Equalizer appliance can be configured in a fault tolerant configuration with a redundant Equalizer appliance in hot standby. This allows network administrators to confidently deliver any mission-critical service or application that requires 100% availability. Users are never impacted by unavailable network resources including complete data center outages, individual server outages, application failures or even the unlikely loss of the Equalizer itself.
